Deli & Movie Night ~ “The Women’s Balcony” with a discussion led by Jesse Paikin
Saturday, April 14, 2018. When the balcony of the women’s section in an old Jerusalem synagogue collapses, it instigates a frenetic series of events. An enigmatic new rabbi emerges promising to help the congregation rebuild, if only they will dedicate themselves to his strict brand of Judaism. A poignant drama-comedy, the film explores themes of Jewish diversity, human dignity, loyalty, and the role of religious leadership, all through the lens of a group of fierce women and their husbands.
Join us as we watch this heart-filled film and engage in discussion afterwards. We'll examine the role of women, the influence of religious tradition in contemporary Israel, and questions of religious change. The film gives us a new glimpse into a Jewish community unfamiliar to many people, and helps us question our assumptions and our own understandings of the diversity of Jews and Judaism.
Deli dinner from Ben & Bill's. Cost: $20 for Beth Emeth members/$25 for non-members.
